Course Description

This 144 hour course offers updated information in the use of force, laws of arrest, search and seizure, criminal law, patrol procedures, and other areas including firearms training, and arrest & control techniques.  There will be  a comprehensive written final examination and exercise tests to demonstrate the student=s proficiency with the handgun, shotgun, and arrest & control techniques.


Participants are required to have successfully completed a P.O.S.T. certified Regular Basic Course or Specialized Investigations= Basic Course, or written approval from P.O.S.T.

Per section 13511.5 Penal Code (PC), participants must submit written certification from the Department of Justice (DOJ) that the participant does not have a criminal record which would disqualify him/her, from owning, possessing or having under his/her control any concealable firearm. 


You will have to supply the following items for your use during the course:

  • Writing instrument
  • Notebook paper (8 1/2" x 11", 3-hole punched)
  • Firearm and ammunition
    • Firearms: All firearms have to pass a safety inspection prior to use.
    • Semi-automatic pistol: 9mm, .40 or .45 caliber, 3 magazines
      and pouches.
    • Ammunition: non-magnum only
      • 500 rounds of handgun ammunition
      • 10 rounds of 12 ga. 2 3/4" (00) buckshot
      • 5 rounds of 12 ga. 2 3/4" rifle slugs 
  • Eye protection
  • Ear protection
  • Gun belt, holster, and cleaning equipment
  • Handcuffs, key, and handcuff case.
  • Baton, baton holder (FCCPA has side-handle batons to loan)

The Fresno City College Police Academy will provide the following items:

  • Handouts
  • Penal Code
  • T-shirts with name
  • Range Targets
  • Shotgun

Course Attire

Business attire is not necessary, but plan to attend class in clean, pressed clothes.  However, the following types of clothing will not be permitted in the classroom at any time: shorts or cut-offs, T-shirts, tank tops, fish net tops, bathing suit attire, thongs or sandals.  The proper attire for outside training will be BDU=s (dark blue or black) and Academy T-shirt.  The BDU=s may be purchased at any uniform store or military outlet.  The Academy T-shirt is included in the course fee and will be provided by Academy staff.

Out-of-State student fees

Students who have not resided in California for at least the last twelve months and one day prior to the start of the semester in which the course is presented, will be charged an additional $1,410.00 out-of-state tuition.
