Summer Jam Geared for New Freshman at Fresno City College
Posted Date: 7/21/2017

A week-long event designed to help new Fresno City College freshman students start their higher education on a strong note will be held from July 31-Aug. 4. Summer Jam students will participate in career development activities, campus tours, academic refresher activities, educational planning, and lots of interaction with instructors, counselors and peers.

“This is an extended orientation to help first time college students start strong so they are ready to succeed on the first day of class.” said Julie Preston-Smith, the college’s student success and support program coordinator.

Currently there are 100 students taking part in Summer Jam. The students were recruited from their local high schools this past spring and commit to participating in the college’s new Guided Pathway framework that provides more directed focused activities. That includes taking 15 units in the fall and spring semester along with a College and Life Management Class (Coun-53), a Freshman Seminar class and take part in all Pathway activities throughout the year, according to Preston-Smith.

Goals of Summer Jam include developing a sense of connectedness to the FCC, improving attitudes toward math and academics in general and improve readiness for fall semester engagement, stated Preston-Smith.

Over the course of a few years, Preston-Smith hopes Summer Jam will accommodate a lot more students.
“We hope to build the framework over the next 2-3 years to offer it to any new, incoming students, which could be several thousands of students each year,” Preston-Smith said.
