The American economy offers ever-increasing opportunities in business careers and Fresno City College provides training in a variety of business fields. The suggested courses of study prepare the student for immediate employment in business.

Training Programs
The Business Division is equipped to offer the following preparations:

  • Career training and retraining.
  • Lower division courses for students planning to transfer to four-year colleges and universities.
  • Short, intensive programs for those who wish to specialize in one area with immediate employment in mind.
  • Electives for students in other divisions.

The regular two-year program with a transfer objective leads to the associate in arts degree. Occupational competency, on the other hand, demands in-depth concentration over a like period culminating in an associate in science degree. A certificate of achievement is available in all programs for those who meet the necessary requirements.

Classroom to Worksite Collaboration
Effort is made to coordinate the school and the job by bringing to the classroom the latest information on business methods and employers' needs. Leaders from business speak to the students and counsel them both at school and at their offices concerning standards, work habits and attitudes. We also work with local businesses to further meet their educational needs.

Employment Available
The job placement office is available to help business students secure part-time positions to help finance their education and full-time jobs for those completing their training. Automation has created a demand for better skills and students are encouraged to remain in the program of study until completion. The demand for well qualified employees continues to be greater than the supply.

Students planning to seek employment upon graduation from Fresno City College, as well as those who plan a short, intensive training period, will find the suggested curricula on the following pages a guide in planning their courses. Twenty-five majors are offered in the areas of accounting, business administration, business management, marketing, microcomputer software specialist, office occupations, paralegal and real estate.

Basic Skills
Keyboarding is a "must" for the business student and is valuable also for students in other divisions. Knowledge of office machines - adding, calculating, dictating, transcribing, computers, electronic typewriters - is quite valuable and necessary for job entry. Word processing skills are required as is a basic understanding of computer information systems.

Matching Training to Ability
Counselors and advisors assist students in making a wise choice of courses which prepare them for employment suited to their aptitudes and interests. Education for professional business careers in management and ownership challenge the most capable students.

Students planning to transfer and pursue a bachelor's degree program should check carefully the requirements of the specific majors in the catalog of the four-year college or university of their choice and consult with their counselors.

The Future
The suggested courses of study offered by the Business Division prepare the student for immediate employment in business and/or transfer.
